Seismic performance of engineering systems in buildings – revised Standard to be published
Standards New Zealand will publish a revised Standard for Seismic performance of engineering systems for buildings, NZS 4219:2009, in March. This Standard sets out the criteria for the seismic performance of building services or engineering systems in buildings, and the requirements for the design, construction, and installation of seismic restraints for engineering systems in buildings.
NZS 4219 is intended to provide a means of compliance with the New Zealand Building Code, Clause B1 Structure; Clause G10 Piped services; and Clause G14 Industrial liquid waste.

New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards – 2008 winners announced
The New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards are the premier awards for New Zealand engineering professionals. The awards, run by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), began four years ago. The awards celebrate excellence in engineering and raise the profile of the profession, by showcasing engineering at its best. Category Awards recognise achievement in various industry areas.
Supreme Award winner
Standards New Zealand proudly sponsored the Supreme Award for the best of the Category Award winners. The 2008 Supreme Award winner is the Arapuni Dam Foundation Remediation Project.
This highly challenging two-year project, to reduce leakage from the Arapuni Dam in the South Waikato, incorporated a unique alliance between local engineering specialists from Mighty River Power, Brian Perry Civil, Damwatch, and Italian foundation engineering firm, Trevi. The alliance developed solutions to overcome water seepage, a ...read more [opens in new window]
Liquid-chilling packages – new Standard
A new Standard for rating and testing Liquid-chilling packages using the vapour compression cycle, AS/NZS 4776, is available. The Standard is in three documents.
- Part 1:
- Method of rating and testing for performance – Rating, AS/NZS 4776.1.1:2008 prescribes the method of rating liquid-chilling packages using the vapour compression cycle to determine the capacity, power, and efficiency of equipment, under a specific set of conditions.
- Method of rating and testing for performance – Testing, AS/NZS 4776.1.2:2008 prescribes the method of testing liquid-chilling packages using the vapour compression cycle to determine the capacity, power, and efficiency of equipment, under a specific set of conditions.
- Part 2:
- Minimum energy performance standard (MEPS) and compliance requirements, AS/NZS 4776.2:2008 provides industry and manufacturers and suppliers of liquid-chilling packages specifically, with MEPS and high-efficiency product performance levels.
(Note that this Standard is not intended to provide for testing in field installations, where steady-state and uniform conditions are difficult to achieve, and provision for measurement is not made.)
