ISO leadership award – New Zealander on winning committee


Peter Fisher, Health and Safety Inspector at the Department of Labour, recently received an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Larry Eicher award certificate from Debbie Chin, Chief Executive at Standards New Zealand.

'Peter is a valued member of ISO Technical Committee (TC) 127, Earth-moving machinery, which was awarded the ISO “Lawrence Eicher Leadership Award" in 2008,' says Debbie. 'Peter has been a participating member onTC 127 committees for nearly seven years and he is well-known to us from his contribution to NZ, AS/NZS and ISO Standards.'

'Many dozens of New Zealanders are participant members of ISO committees, across virtually every sector,' says Debbie. 'Peter's participation on TC 127 continues to help ensure New Zealand's voice is heard on these international committees and that the Standards published by TC 127 are applicable to the New Zealand environment.'

Award recognises outstanding work of ISO Technical Committee 127

Every year, the leadership award provides recognition for superior performance by one of ISO's Standards development groups. Dr. Eicher, who passed away in March 2002, served as Secretary-General of ISO from 1986 to 2002.

The outstanding work of TC 127 in creative and innovative Standards development for the earth-moving industry was recognised when TC 127 was presented with the award for 2008 in Dubai late last year. TC 127 was praised for focusing on and adapting to new technologies, facilitating the involvement and participation of developing countries, and adapting best practices from other ISO committees to their scope of work.

Presenting the award, the then-ISO President Håkan Murby said, 'The work of ISO/TC 127 has provided a core of state-of-the-art knowledge, based on international expertise, on which national Standards and regulations have been able to draw. Its Standards have helped to cut design and manufacturing costs by harmonising requirements worldwide and ultimately benefiting the customers for, and users of, earth-moving machinery.'

Standards developed by ISO/TC 127 have been adopted as national Standards, or are referred to in regulations, in the Americas, Asia, Australasia, Central Asia, Europe, and the Far East. The committee has developed 132 Standards and has been involved in more than 50 work items focusing on the ergonomic and safety aspects of earth-moving machinery.
