New risk assessment Standard joins risk management toolbox

Two recently published Standards on risk management have just been joined by a third on risk assessment techniques. Together, the three Standards provide organisations of all types with a well-stocked toolbox for tackling situations that could affect the achievement of their objectives.

Risk management – Risk assessment techniques ISO/IEC 31010:2009 will help organisations to implement the risk management principles and guidelines provided by the recently published Risk management – Principles and guidelines Standard AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009. AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 is also complemented by Risk management – Vocabulary ISO Guide 73:2009.

Information and documentation – Standards for interoperability among library and related systems

Within ISO Technical Committee 46 'Information and documentation', subcommittee 4 'Technical interoperability' plays a key role in facilitating interoperability among systems and organisations. Recently, the subcommittee has finalised two important Standards – ISO 2146 and ISO 8459 – that will underpin interoperability among library and related systems, services, and databases.

New Zealand holds the secretariat for ISO Technical Committee 46/Subcommittee 4. Alison Elliott, Director of Content Services at the National Library of New Zealand, is Chair of Subcommittee 4.

ISO Standards discussed at World Economic Forum 2010

ISO international Standards are practical tools to help tackle many of the challenges discussed at the 40^th meeting of the World Economic Forum, 27 – 31 January 2010 at Davos, Switzerland, on the theme of 'Rethink, redesign, rebuild'.

This was the conclusion reached by ISO Secretary-General Rob Steele who took the opportunity to participate and meet a number of the senior business and government leaders among the 2500 people attending.

Radio frequency identification – new international Standard helps to trace products

The need to be able to trace products throughout the supply chain has strongly increased in recent years, for reasons of safety and reliability. The new Supply chain applications of RFID – Product tagging Standard ISO 17367:2009 will help manufacturers and distributors to track products and to manage their traceability thanks to standardised radio frequency tags.

Traceability is defined as the tracking and tracing of a product and information related to it at each stage of a chain of production, processing, distribution, and selling. The development of radio frequency identification (RFID), including peripheral devices and their applications, will help to increase the safety and reliability of products for consumers.
