Design and innovation awards – intensive care bed and world-first safety injector

M8 Intensive Care bed

Australian International Design Award goes to New Zealand bed manufacturer

New Plymouth-based medical bed manufacturer Howard Wright has won the 2010 'Australian International Design Award of the Year' for its M8 Intensive Care bed.

The Australian International Design Awards is a division of Standards Australia and one of the world's most renowned design assessment programmes, recognising product design and innovation excellence. Winners were announced in Sydney on 4 June 2010.

Howard Wright's M8 Intensive Care bed was recognised for its outstanding design, attention to detail, and innovation. The M8 is designed to reduce patient handling and risk of injury by allowing for a wide range of medical procedures to be performed without the need to transfer the patient from the bed.

Other New Zealand-designed products recognised in the 2010 Australian International Design Awards include the Optiline Sheep Drencher (designed by Simcro and Novartis Animal Health), Be task chair (designed by Formway Design), and Maia Shower and Vitamin C dechlorination canister (designed by Methven).

New Zealand Agritech Innovation Award – world-first safety injector

Hamilton agritech company Simcro won the top award for its 'Sekurus Ultra' safety injector in the New Zealand Agritech Innovation Awards in Hamilton in June 2010. Simcro provides customised animal health delivery solutions to the pharmaceutical industry.

'Sekurus Ultra' is a world first, 'self-tenting' safety injector for the delivery of animal vaccines. Its patented 'self-tenting' needle guard and two-step mechanism allow operators to administer one-handed subcutaneous injections more efficiently and more precisely while keeping hands clear of the injection site. 'Sekurus Ultra' was launched in New Zealand in February. The injector was developed and customised for the delivery of BoprivaTM, Pfizer Animal Health's new vaccine for cattle.

'It's very exciting to see that our commitment to design excellence and innovation has been recognised at this level,' says Will Rouse, Simcro Managing Director.
