Standards New Zealand and Standards Australia have just published two new risk handbooks – SAA/SNZ HB 266:2010 facilitates the effective management of risk in independent not-for-profit (NFP), non-profit, and non-government organisations, and SAA/SNZ HB 246:2010 has been written for application across the whole spectrum of sport and recreation, including related activities conducted within education institutions at all levels and government agencies at all levels.

HB 246:2010 Guidelines for managing risk in sport and recreation organizations

This document has been written for application across the whole spectrum of sport and recreation, including activities conducted within education institutions at all levels and Government Agencies at all levels. It is anticipated that National and State (or County) organizations will develop (or update current) processes to align with this new Handbook and implement risk management at all levels within their sport or recreation structures.

Comments: The committee met on 19 July. The five working groups are continuing to develop changes to the draft, and these will be presented at the next committee meeting to be scheduled for late September.

Ministry of Fisheries benthic impact Standard

Committee: Benthic Impact Standard

Estimated completion date: April 2011
Comments: Standards New Zealand is facilitating the development of a standard to address the impacts of fishing on the benthic (seabed) environment. A committee made up of representatives from key stakeholders including the fishing and seafood industries, environmental groups, and marine science providers has been formed to help develop the standard. The standard will be a Ministry of Fisheries standard and is likely to be implemented through fisheries management plans. The committee has an independent chair, and a technical writer is preparing an initial draft of the standard for the committee to consider. A public consultation draft is expected to be available around November 2010.
