The following ISO working groups held their technical meetings during from 19 –28 January 2011 to address the emergence of new types of service robots:

• ISO TC 184/ SC 2/WG 8 Service robots
• ISO TC 184/ SC 2/ WG 1 Vocabulary on robots and robotic devices

Energy services – potential ISO Standard for energy suppliers

Standards New Zealand is consulting with stakeholders about a potential International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Standard for energy suppliers. The Standard would provide sector specific guidance for energy suppliers to measure and assess services, to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these services to household users, and to increase customer satisfaction.

Safer transport of chemicals on ships – new emergency breathing apparatus Standard

Ships and marine technology – Breathing apparatus for ships – Part 4: Self-contained breathing apparatus for emergency escape required by the IMO IBC and IGC Codes, ISO 23269-4:2010, will help to improve the safety of crews of ships. The Standard will help ship crews transporting potentially dangerous chemicals or gases to be safer if a collision or accident results in a leak of the cargo.

Surface chemical analysis – new CD-ROM collection of Standards

ISO has published Surface chemical analysis collection on CD-ROM, a collection of 41 international Standards and related documents on surface chemical analysis.

The potential of nanotechnology is huge, and its applications range as wide as medicine, beauty, IT, advanced materials, and even food. With the rapid growth of nanotechnology-based products, researchers, manufacturers, regulators, and consumers are increasingly concerned with their safety and environmental impact. Nanotechnologies – Characterization of nanoparticles in inhalation exposure chambers for inhalation toxicity testing ISO 10808:2010 will help to address this issue.

New ISO President – Dr Boris Aleshin

Dr Boris Aleshin has been elected ISO President for a 2-year term from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2012. Dr Aleshin has over 30 years' experience in industry and government in the Russian Federation and has been at the forefront of reforming technical regulation and standardisation in Russia.
