Issue 34 – December 2011
Two new ISO Standards will help organisations to disclose corporate information quickly and effectively. Information and documentation – Management systems for records – Fundamentals and vocabulary ISO 30300:2011 and Information and documentation – Management systems for records – Requirements ISO 30301:2011 distil the expertise of experts drawn from 27 countries on five continents.
Increased pressure by industry regulators obliges companies to provide such information because irregularities in financial management, ethical dealings, disclosure, and transparency of decisions have become common. The ISO 30300 series offers the methodology to systematically create and manage records aligned with organisational objectives and strategies.
Creating records is integral to any organisation's activities, processes, and systems. A management system for records (MSR) improves business efficiency, accountability, risk management, and business continuity. 'Managing records using a management system Standard supports cost-effective operational processes such as storage, information retrieval, information re-use, litigation, and due diligence,' say Judith Ellis and Carlota Bustelo, leaders of the working groups that developed the Standards.
ISO 30300 includes the fundamentals and vocabulary common to the whole series and ISO 30301 specifies requirements for an MSR. Further Standards in the ISO 30300 series are under development.
ISO 30300 and ISO 30301 complement other ISO management system Standards such as ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and ISO/IEC 27001 (information security management). ISO 30300 and ISO 30301 are targeted at the government, education, and manufacturing sectors (especially pharmaceuticals and mining), and those companies in sectors with a strong need to demonstrate compliance, such as telecommunications.
