New risk management Standard available now – seminars planned for early 2010

The new Risk management – Principles and guidelines Standard, AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 is available now for purchase from Standards New Zealand. AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 is a joint Australia/New Zealand adoption of the newly published ISO 31000:2009, and supersedes AS/NZS 4360:2004.

Its predecessor, AS/NZS 4360 Risk management, was first published in 1995. After AS/NZS 4360 was last revised in 2004, the joint Australia/New Zealand committee OB-007 decided that rather than undertake a similar revision in 2009, it would promote the development of an international Standard on risk management, which could then be adopted locally.

Risk management – new vocabulary Standard

A new Risk management – Vocabulary ISO Guide 73:2009 provides the definitions of generic terms related to risk management.

Users of ISO Guide 73:2009 include those engaged in managing risks; those who are involved in activities of ISO and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); and developers of national or sector-specific standards, guides, procedures, and codes of practice about the management of risk.

ISO Guide 73:2009 aims to encourage a consistent understanding of, and a coherent approach to:

  • the description of activities about the management of risk
  • the use of uniform risk management terminology in processes and frameworks for the management of risk.

For principles and guidelines on risk management, reference is made to AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009.

Software documentation – new Standard

A new international Standard will help testers and reviewers of software user documentation in their work. Systems and software engineering – Requirements for testers and reviewers of user documentation, ISO/IEC 26513:2009, defines the process through which user documentation products are tested.

Effective use of software can be greatly boosted by a well-designed and user-friendly documentation. ISO/IEC 26513:2009 will help to ensure that software users are provided with consistent, complete, accurate, and usable documentation. It will help those who test and review software user documentation as part of the software life cycle process including testers, reviewers, information designers, software architects, usability specialists, business analysts, and other related roles.
