The new steel structures materials, fabrication, and construction Standard in use
Standards New Zealand published NZS 3404.1:2009 Steel structures Standard – Part 1: Materials, fabrication, and construction in October 2009. We talked to two users of the Standard about the changes made in NZS 3404.1:2009 and how the document is used in their business.
- David Cooke, Technical Director – Structural at Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner, is a member of the committee that developed NZS 3404.1:2009.
- Malcolm Hammond, Managing Director at MJH Engineering was previously a user of NZS 3404:1997 and is a member of the committee that developed NZS 3404.1:2009. 'It was great to participate in the committee and to discuss the practical application of the Standard,' says Malcolm. 'It gave us the ability to have some input into the clarification of the Standard.'

Standards New Zealand proudly sponsored the Supreme Award for the 2009 Engineering Excellence Awards again this year. The winner of the 2009 Supreme Award for New Zealand Engineering Excellence is Aircraft Hangar Maintenance Docks, Beca.
Richard Westlake (Chair, Standards Council), Debbie Chin (Chief Executive, Standards New Zealand), Rob Warner (General Manager Strategic Development and Innovation Centre), and Vivian Kloosterman (Standards Council member) attended the awards dinner in Wellington in November 2009. Approximately 400 people celebrated at the awards dinner, along with Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast; Maurice Williamson, Minister for Building and Construction; and other ministers.

IRL Research Engineer Paul Harris was awarded the RJ Scott medal in November for his significant contributions to the development and application of electronic devices in New Zealand.
Bestowed by the Royal Society of New Zealand, the medal is awarded to the researcher who, working within New Zealand, has undertaken work of great merit and has made an outstanding contribution towards the advancement of a particular branch of engineering sciences, technologies, and their applications.
